I Recieved this email today (11 July 07) and we now have a boat test writeup in the PBO . David Harding is the technical editor for the PBO and he also photographed the Galion 22 called 'Galaxy' as shown on our Photo Gallery page. Jim Hoare is the owner of the boat and he is also a member of the East Dorset Sailing Club. When the test began he wrote:-

First Time Buyers
If you are buying a boat for the first time then here are some must have tips.Dont assume the guy who had the boat before you has done everything needed on the boat, So develop some engineers logic when inspecting it. On the other hand don't assume that thre's a lot wrong with her either. Just look at everything and trust your judgement on what you can see. If it looks right it usually is but don't be afraid to ask other experienced people.
If you are a novice you need to get an understanding of what drives the sailing boat forward and I don't just mean the wind. The sail works like a propeller blade. By being angled to the wind the blade moves forward and turns the windmill. Your boat is well balasted so won't turn over but keep ready to hang on when she heals to the wind. It can happen quite suddenly. Get a good set of charts and study them so you know the area you are sailing in. Check the depths and don't run aground. If you dry out on your side don't panic. This particular model does'nt flood when lifting back up on the incomming tide. Best not to dry out on your side if this can be avoided though.
If theres a good blow double reef the main when you start out, you can always take a reef out later if the wind drops. Its not so easy reefing in a good blow when at sea. Although this boat is easy to handle definately reef if the wind gets too strong otherwise you might get a few split seams in your sails.
Have confidence that this boat will look after you well at sea. To help you learn more about sailing join a yacht club if possible, but be prepaired to hear both mild understated stories about disasterous happenings and on the other hand totally wrongly exagerated stories about minor events aimed at putting you off sailing for life. Yacht clubs compete with fishing clubs on the story front you know. Finally don't be afraid to sail its easier than you think.

FOR SALE £1,900.
It is with
very great sadness that we are selling up a Galion, Cottontail.
A 1967 build she is now lying in Ramsgate marine, but having moved to the
channel islands last year there is no affordable way to get her here and money
is short so she has to go.
Everyone in the owners association knows what great boats these are, if you know
of anyone in the market then please let them know.
Throughout 2007 we did loads of work on her, the engine was overhauled as was
the starter. The upholstery was all replaced and removable washable covers were
added making all 4 berths really comfortable. We also added a sea toilet and
fitted shelving to make a sensible galley area, where a single portable stove
and 'omnia' stove top oven live. And we added a good Echomax radar reflector,
plus LED nav lights.
The engine now needs some more attention (it is an early 80s Vire 7) as it
overheats, but the engine itself is in good order.
The jib is in excellent condition but the main needs washing and a bag adding.
All the rigging is if useable condition.
The exterior wood is all due for a new coat of varnish, the cabin headlining
also needs replacing (the forecabin is done).
We are open to suggestions on
asking price from fellow owners, but looking at comparable boats that need some
time spent tidying we are thinking of
£1,900.

Petter AC1W (Mini 6)
Hello!
I'd like to make a few comments that may or may not be of interest.A friend nicknamed "Captain Bligh" asked me to find him a yacht. Eventually a Robert Ives "Four-21" was found. The engine is a Petter AC1W (Mini 6). First impressions of the engine were rather poor as neither the yacht broker or the prospective purchaser knew about the glow plug and there was a can of Eezi-Start!The purchase of a Farryman was considered but very poor communications from the agents lost the sale. By then it had been discovered that the Petter engine did in fact have a glow plug and also that there was still 100% spares availability from excellent local agents. The Yanmar 1GM was too tall and the BMW D7 (marinised Hatz industrial engine) seen in another boat was disliked because of its conrod-dipper lubrication and unreliable flywheel alternator that causes radio interference.Possibly a very small marinised Japanese industrial engine would have fitted but the cost of a decent smooth running twin is horrendous. As to propellers "Bligh" who has sailed to Australia claims that two blade props are rubbish and give very poor thrust especially in reverse. Unless one can spare £500 or so for a "Max-Prop" a three blade propeller is reckoned to be the best compromise. (How many sailors are really going to open the engine hatch and turn the prop shaft to get a 2 blade prop behind the deadwood?).The Farryman is let down by its Hurth gearbox whereas the SOM box on the Petter is 2:1` in both directions. The Petters external car-type alternator is also easy to replace if it fails. OK the construction is a bit messy as it never started out as a boat engine but for eyesores the Yanmar YSE "side pot" has to be tops.Nice website very interesting.Best regards from David.

'Bee Hive' The Only Known Brand New Galion 22 Here is an interesting one. This Galion 22 was purchased in 1969 and due to circumstances put in storage until recently. It has now recently been completed and fitted out in Hillyards yard in Littlehampton and has been sailed for only one season in Chichester, and the Solent. It's been fully tested by a very experienced crew so now you have got to see this, just email george.hookings@btinternet.com or telephone 01903 739608 , he will be delighted to show you everything. Digital & Non digital photos of the inside are also available on request. She is called Bee Hive, price £5250.00 all inclusive
The one-time owner of Galion 22 Sail No1 emailed me the other day
Interested to come across your website and email address on the Internet. In 1969 I had the pleasure of buying the Galion 22 No 1 that won the Round the Island Race in 1968 and had great fun in her sailing out of Lymingfton until adverse finances impelled me to sell her in early 1970s. She was seakindly and swift a rare combination. The only problem was that if one went too fast the stern tucked down and water came in through the bilge drain unless blocked off with a large rubber bung! It was also a season before I discovered that the Vire engine had a seawater cooling system. When I left this open however the water drained back at rest and flooded the motor! I wonder what happened to her - is she still sailing and if so what is her current name? What does a G22 in reasonable nick fetch these days on the South Coast?
Best regards
Bill Musker
These boats have their number embossed on the inside of the transom and can be viewed through the starboard cockpit locker. Bill Musker also states that she was made of fibreglass and not wood as is sometimes thought to have been the case.
MOORING AND ANCHORING
In recent years it has become increasingly obvious that the basic principles of anchoring and moo ring are often imperfectly understood. (Inevitably this has led to equipment failures, either through poor system design or through the selection of unsuitable components, with consequent damage injury and even death. So This instruction on mooring and anchoring may be of vital interest 'click here '

By the way Deacons the people who made the Galion 22 had a used boat show 10TH-19TH SEPTEMBER 2004
Details at: http://www.usedboatshow.co.uk/ There was a Galion 22 for sale there. Click here to see boat spec: The interesting points about this boat are that the manufacturers are given as J. Dobson of Shardow, Derbyshire. Note the windows are different from the standard design. this is probably to strengthen them against the event of a extreme slam from a "beam on" sea. Although I have never heard that this was ever a problem as the standard windows are curved and extremely strong. I should think it's always a good idea to make logical improvements of this nature. Think of the conditions one might encounter in extreme adverse conditions.

News
We had another small write up in The Practical BoatOwner Magazine on page 19 of the April 2006 issue No.472. ___________________________
I hear from one of our members that some of our owners sail to Holland each year. That gives us even more confidence in the capability of our boats. They sure do get around. The same member sails there himself. They don't come better than that.
Well now this is news. Apparently the Galion 22 has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. See the email from Bill on the Members page, he says, "She was sailed from the UK when new in the early 70's, might be a early Mini-transat.". Yes isn't that something? Well all the other classes are bragging about their boats crossing the Atlantic and now we can say "We too can do that". Excellent stuff.

I had another email the other day :-
- Ahoy!
I recently purchased a Galion 22 in Washington, DC and keep her (Aqua Sulis) at Buzzard Point on the Potomac River.- I have had a hard time finding any information about the boat and therefore greatly appreciated the information provided on your site. Thanks a Zillion!

- Well I'm very pleased about that, it shows were on the right track, thanks for writing Smilie it was greatly appreciated.

- We finally got to sail down to the east coast in our Galion 22. We made it at last and the cat got better thanks to the vets and he's doing fine. We just made it before the colder autumn starts. The cruise was to Queenborough, Burnham on crouch. It was a great trip and I feel more enthused and satisfied than ever.

Diesel Engines
About the engine inquiry from one of our members David. We now have a propeller calculator on the engine page.
- Diesel engines do not like to be under loaded and if the prop is too small or the engine is too big it will cause glazing of the bores.
The marine diesel engine I can suggest for powering the Galion 22 is the Farymann water-cooled 6.5HP model 15W to be found on http://www.farymann.de/frames_englisch.htm. It seems that a 1.53 reduction gearbox with forward, neutral & reverse gears is required, a 9 x 7inch two bladed propeller is indicated. See the "Engine" page for details. (In view of some indirectly related problems I have heard of recently I would say a 2:1 reduction gearbox might be best.)

Petrol Engines
Do you have a Vire engine in your boat? If you do this is what we have:- Full Brochure PDF: Click here. By the way Fairways Marine has now closed down for good and the Vire engine is now served by the link below. http://www.s109316956.websitehome.co.uk/vire7/ . You should find all you need there for your Vire engine. . ________________________ Speed Calculation.
Theoretical speed of your boat is calculated thus: The square root of the waterline length in feet x 1.34 = speed in knots = 6.3knots. However 5.7 knots is the best I've heard of and even then the stern dips into the trough when the quarter wave gets too far astern.
